06. The Birth of Human Nature – A Negative Transformation

In our last episode we learned how the most tragic decision ever made took place. What were the consequences? There is only one expression that would envelop all that happened as a result of that terrible decision: A Negative Transformation.

Yes, Man, both Male and Female were transformed, from being made in the Creator’s image and according to God’s likeness to being mortal beings, enslaved and void of life. It is a tremendous and devastating transformation! It is similar to seeing the place where a city once grew and thrived, but now is a desert with nothing but ashes and corruption. That is what happened to Man. His choice to KNOW Evil would forever change everything about his existence. He remained a functional being; breathing, hearing, moving, thinking, etc. But without life; for both, life and death are a state of existence.

Life is the state of existence that is connected to and provided by the Creator and all that He is and generates. Death, is the opposite: A state of existence void of His presence and provision.

That absence of God’s presence and his provision to Man is what was declared by the Creator upon Man in the Genesis account, Chapter 3:

“He said to the woman, I will greatly increase your sorrow and your conception; you shall bear sons in sorrow, and your desire shall be toward your husband; and he shall rule over you.”

“And He said to the man, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree about which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat from it, the ground shall be cursed because of you; you shall eat of it in sorrow all the days of your life. And it shall bring forth thorns and thistles for you, and you shall eat the plant of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until your return to the ground. For you have been taken out of it; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:16-19 litv)

There is so much stated in these paragraphs! Sorrow, conflict, emptiness, loneliness, abuse, worry, greed, insecurity, confusion, despair, fear, etc. etc..

But the very worst of what was declared upon man were three things: The change to his identity, the change of his occupation and the change of his environment:

His identity changed from being created in the image of God and according to his likeness to “Dust”. Those were the words declared by the Creator: “For you are dust, and to dust shall you return.” What a dramatic transformation that was. He was created as one of the most unique and glorious creatures having the image of God himself in him; that was his glory! But now, the glory was gone and he is reduced to the elements that compose him: Dust; the material out of which he was formed. This is the core reason for the innate desire in each human being to become somebody! We need achievements and titles and status and much more in order to think well of ourselves and compare ourselves with others. No one likes being called (or to be seen as) a nobody! Identity was the greatest casualty of that devastating decision. The change in his identity would have far reaching negative consequences to all that he would be and do throughout his generations as we will see.

Second, his occupation changed from being governor over all that was created on Earth, to being a slave of his own survival. He would go from having the creatures of Earth tend to him, to learning the struggle to make ends meet. He had been created and placed in the midst of abundance and wealth, but now he was out on his own, out to carve out for himself a piece of bread with the sweat of his brow and to worry as he ate it what to do next in order to survive. He had chosen to know Evil, and Evil is the absence of blessing.

Third, there is a total change of environment for Man. They were originally placed in the garden the Creator had planted and prepared for them; all the factors related to their comfort, sustenance and well being were provided for. Now, they were sent into the wild to fend for themselves with all the uncertainties and dangers that involves. The ground is accursed as a result of his choice adding to the enormous list of contrary factors that have become part of his new and terrible existence.

His journey into the knowledge of Evil has begun. This is a very different creature than what Man was created to be. This creature, we shall call HUMAN, did not exist before these events unfolded, but now it is here; and today, we are living proof of its reality.

The very worst consequence of the choice to know evil is what has taken place inside his being. His spirit has become darkened, and because of it the Human’s entire existence will be bound to wrong doing. Yes, that is the simplest way of putting it. A being that has the knowledge of what is right but great difficulty to perform it; finding that there is a force inside that drags one into wrong doing only to reap the consequences which produce more wrongdoing and on and on the snowball continues to grow until we destroy ourselves and those around us. Such is the nature of the Human.

The Genesis account records such events in the history of the Human: Adam and Eve had children; the first two, Cain and Abel, grew up into young men and the story lets us see the dysfunctional family they already were. The jealousy and infighting that permeated their relationship culminates in murder! Cain kills his brother Abel. And even though the Creator approached him and warned him, he remains defiant, arrogant and unrepentant! That is Human! (Genesis 4)

Soon the human race is rapidly reproducing and filling the Earth with the fruits of their doings. Violence, abuse, fights, murder, sexual corruption; lying, deception, etc. This is what Genesis 6:5-6 tells us about:

“And Jehovah saw that the evil of man was great on the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the day long.”

“And Jehovah repented that he had made man on the earth, and He was grieved to his heart..”

How terrible and destructive is this transformation. From being in the image of God to being filled with evil: “every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the day long”. So much was the evil in and from mankind that God decided to end his existence. BUT among all humans he found one man who had not given himself totally over to evil, one who desired good; and this man found grace in God’s eyes: Noah. A great flood came upon the earth and through Noah, the Creator provided a way for each creature to again CHOOSE between evil or Him. None except Noah and his family chose to believe the word of the Creator and consequently perished in the flood. After the terrible destruction of the flood, Noah and his family re-established the human race on earth. But evil was still in them; restrained, but it was there, and soon it showed itself again to continue its mission of corrupting and leading humans in an ever darker self destructive path.

However, in the midst of all this tragedy, we must turn our attention to an all important part of the declarations made by the Creator:

“And Jehovah God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all beasts, and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your belly, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”

Man was not consumed or destroyed because of his choice. Instead, he was granted Mercy. God committed himself to the destruction of what the serpent had started in Man. From the seed of the woman, He would bring one who would put an end to the tragedy and redeem man from his slavery to a cursed nature: The human nature.

Hope was planted in the spirit of Man by the Word of the Creator! That is the source of the inner yearning we all have to be free, be better, find success, etc. But it would not be within the prison of human nature. This is where we come back to the long awaited message; The message of Adoption!
