08. The Price of Adoption

As you consider God’s invitation to become his child, it is likely that your conscience will hinder you from accepting it because the very thought of approaching God puts you in an acute sense of guilt and bitterness. Most of us never voice it, but down deep we strongly resent what has happened to us and what has not happened to us as much as we regret our errors and how we have brought harm to ourselves and others. Many of us are intent on making things right by doing good things to compensate for the bad ones; and yet, some of us believe we are ahead because the good we are involved in doing surpasses the bad we’ve done in our own estimation. However, when it comes to the issue of standing before the Creator we shiver at the thought because we intuitively fear the verdict he would announce when he judges or weighs our existence, our choices, etc. The human mindset is one of merit and therefore earned rights, both positive and negative.

God is perfectly aware of this condition in each of us. From the youngest reasoning child, to the oldest person on earth, we all know and carry both: guilt and bitterness.

These very powerful and devastating factors are what the Creator addressed first in order to make adoption possible for us:

” For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

“For God did not send His Son into the world that He might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”

“The one believing into Him is not condemned; but the one not believing has already been condemned, for he has not believed into the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

(John 3:16-18 litv)

Remember the event of the worst decision ever made? The fallen cherub expected the destruction of Man, but it never happened! In this scripture we can see the reason behind it. In order to preserve Man, and give each person he created, the opportunity to make the ONLY eternal decision they were created to make (which is: Receive or reject his invitation for adoption) God was willing to pay the ultimate price: His own life!

This is the price of adoption: GOD’S OWN LIFE. Nothing less.

Can you see what this says about you? This is how much you are worth to God! All of us struggle with “self-worth” and “self-image” and we do because God declared the human to be “dust” as we have previously seen. But to him, this “dust” has a singular purpose and destiny: To be transformed into his children through adoption, and that is worth it all. This is, and forever will be, the greatest love reality ever demonstrated. And it was done for you and for me and for each person on earth, so that the invitation for adoption would carry the weight of the entire universe and more; IT IS A SERIOUS INVITATION! It was prepared before the creation of the world, and it was carried out with absolute perfection so that nothing can hinder us from receiving it.

Let’s work at understanding why God’s life had to be laid down as payment for our adoption to be possible.

In the previous episode we saw the horror of human corruption and the stubborn intent of our race to continue in the destructive path of evil. We also saw that human nature is passed on from one generation to the next, without human possibility of undoing what Adam and Eve started on that tragic day at the garden of Eden. In consequence, God assesses our species and states: “ALL HAVE SINNED” Therefore all are guilty without exception. These guilty beings are the ones he is intent on adopting! He is not at all deceived or ignorant of our condition, and more important yet, he can not, and will not change truth. Evil is Evil – Good is Good. It is black and white, with no shadows in between. Furthermore, everything in his kingdom is ruled by laws. Eternal, living and perfect laws. They don’t need revision ever, because they are perfect; and that perfect law states that the penalty of sin (the practice of evil) is death. Period. So how can he fulfill his passionate dream of creating his family with creatures that are guilty of death? Eternal death? There is but one way: BY PAYING THEIR SENTENCE. This would be the cost of adopting such creatures. And that is exactly what he determined to do:

” For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

“For God did not send His Son into the world that He might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”

There is so much to be learned about this amazing and irrefutable act of God for Man. And we have our whole life to do so. But for this episode we need to at least see 3 vital pieces of what is contained in this decision and the actions that were carried out to bring about the reality of adoption to each and everyone of us.

First: This is the greatest act of love. It is not a feeling alone. Nor was it reciprocal to what humans were continuously choosing. When we were God’s enemies, then he gave his life for us.

Second: The payment had to be perfect. In other words, this could only be done once and for all. The only way to make possible the adoption of humans into children of God was to eliminate Evil from their beings and pay for all the wrongdoing (sin) committed by each individual person of mankind, from the very first, to the very last of them; and the sentence was the death of each. No other creature in the entire universe amounted to the value of the debt the humans had and would pile up; nor could one be created to do so. That left only one alternative: God’s own life. It would be the perfect, singular, eternal, irreversible payment that would satisfy the law. But, though the cost was that great, the result would be exactly what he wanted most: HIS FAMILY! And so he loved them more than enough to pay the price of their redemption.

So let me share with you in the shortest possible way how it happened and what took place when it did:

The messenger, the Living Word of God became flesh. It took on the form of a man, being born of a woman just like the Creator had promised in the account of Genesis 3!

He came as God’s son, so that we could get the picture of what God was about and to explain to us the purpose of why humans existed: Becoming God’s family. He was named Jesus. As he lived among humans, he revealed to us, for the very first time, the very nature of God and did GOOD because that is his nature. Then he offered himself as payment for the human’s sentence and was nailed to a cross. While on the cross, he was laden with all the sin that was ever committed and would ever be committed (God can do that) The amount of sin was so much that he was transformed into sin itself. At that horrifying instant in time, God executed legal judgment upon sin (all sin) and destroyed it in that body on the cross. All the condemnation and damnation that was the right of humans was paid right there, forever. Jesus died so that our penalty would be legally paid and we could be adopted without guilt or legal debt as his brothers: children of God!

Third: IT IS DONE! Which means IT CAN NOT BE UNDONE! God did not ask anyone if we wanted to be redeemed, forgiven or adopted. He did it out of what he is: LOVE! And it is absolutely done. These were Jesus’ last words upon the cross “IT IS DONE” Oh friend! Please behold and take in the wonder of this truth. YOU ARE WORTH THE LIFE OF GOD! HE HAS ALREADY PAID IT IN ORDER TO MAKE POSSIBLE YOUR ADOPTION INTO HIS FAMILY! The proof that the payment worked is the resurrection of Jesus from the death. He was raised victorious over sin, death and evil, having obtained eternal salvation for all who would receive him.

What remains to be done? One thing alone: RECEIVING THE INVITATION GOD HAS MADE YOU. For me, this is the one thing that completely baffles my mind. God’s love is such that he treats each of us with the same respect he has for himself. He is not imposing his will on us, he is respectfully communicating his love and will for us, asking us to choose to accept his love or reject it. Please listen to his words again:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

“For God did not send His Son into the world that He might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”

“The one believing into Him is not condemned; but the one not believing has already been condemned, for he has not believed into the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

(John 3:16-18 litv)

As you can see, all that he has done is laid at your feet so that you can make your personal choice. It is your turn. Others, beginning with Adam and Eve have made choices that affected your life without your consent or participation. But now, because of what God has done for you and me, and all; each of us has the opportunity to choose again; TO CHOOSE OUR VERY OWN DESTINY. This is how JUSTICE HAS BEEN DONE TO YOU AND ME! We are no longer victims, we can each make our own choice.

So here you are, before God’s love, not before his judgment or anger. He is NOT demanding that you become a better person, that you change your ways, that you stop this or that before you can approach him. He has done what was impossible to humans, so that you can come to him and RECEIVE FORGIVENESS. Yes! Forgiveness is the result of the payment made for all your sin. How do you get it? By receiving Jesus. HE IS FORGIVENESS, BECAUSE HE IS THE PAYMENT FOR YOUR GUILT. It is not complicated, this is not a religion that you must enter and practice. This is the entry point to LIFE! ETERNAL LIFE begins with receiving the forgiveness that Jesus is.

Forgiveness also pays you for all the wrongs that have been done against you. Receiving forgiveness is receiving the death of Jesus as payment for all the wrongs committed against you, from Adam and Eve’s deadly choice to the last offense that will ever be committed against you. FORGIVENESS DELIVERS YOU FROM ALL BITTERNESS!

As you receive Jesus, you are receiving the invitation to be adopted. He is the Word that creates and has created all that exists. He is the message of adoption. He is the payment of the human debt. He is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE. No one can come to the Father (as an adopted child) except through him.

Well, as you can see, there is nothing or no one that can keep you from your destiny. No accusation, no deed, no argument, that can deny you what love has given you. Only you can decide to accept or reject it. That is why God says: “The one believing into Him is not condemned; but the one not believing has already been condemned, for he has not believed into the name of the only begotten Son of God.” But why would you reject the only true love you will ever be offered?

It is that simple and that accessible. God is with you at this very moment. His spirit is all around you waiting for your answer. If you open the door of your heart and with your own words invite Jesus into your being, LIFE will enter you; TRUTH will enter you; FORGIVENESS will enter you, and the Creator will create in you a child of God!
