41. Mercy SAVES!

Throughout our walk together, we have seen mercy at work in many critical points of Man’s history. However, human thinking understands mercy as a casual or sporadic action based on an emotional response to an offender. That concept must change in us. In order for our transformation to advance, we must come to see Mercy as a constant; in other words, Mercy for us is an unbreakable, undoable, constantly present and eternal environment into which we have been placed and no power in the universe is able to take us out of it.
Mercy puts a permanent end to the human system of merit we have spoken of in previous chapters. It does so, because it has fully addressed the issue of merit by declaring all and each human beings unmerited of favor. Listen to God’s point of view in the matter:

” as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
“Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Romans 3:10-18 ESV)

God is absolutely clear on who, how and what humans are. His relationship with humans is not accidental or frustrated; it is absolutely intentional and amazingly: enjoyable to Him! You will understand why in this episode.

Listen to these words again:

“For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” (Titus 3:3-5 KJV)

God! Knowing exactly what and how we were, determined he loved us; and totally aside from our merits, He saved us according to His mercy! If the meaning and implications of these words are not clear to you yet, please go back to the previous episodes and work through them again and again until you get it. God knew the price to save us would be his own life: He paid it! God knew that even after He gave his life we would not be able to correspond to his love: He adopted us as we were: humans! God knew that we could not change our nature and fulfill his dream: He committed to our transformation! What part of these did you or I deserve? NONE! All the contrary! We deserved death! We deserved damnation and destruction, and it was and is in His power to execute that upon us; but He chose to love us, and created an amazing environment: MERCY, for you and I to exist within, so that His dream can be accomplished in each of our beings.

Why an environment and not an action or a series of actions? Let’s look at this carefully, for this is a foundational truth that we must understand and receive in order to allow our transformation to become established in our being.

What is an environment? In the simplest way of explaining it, it is a container that is conducive to the fulfillment of a purpose.
For example, Earth’s environment. It contains all the necessary ingredients and factors that make physical life as we know it possible in our planet. In contrast, when we step away from Earth’s environment, special artificial environments must be created and sustained for humans to be able to exist in “hostile” environments. This is the case of our space vehicles and the space station. Space is an “hostile” environment to man. We are not created to exist in outer space. But with the aid of vehicles that contain the elements of our Earth’s environment, it has been made possible for Man to explore outer space, within the limitations of sustainability that our artificial environments provide. If these artificial environments are ever broken the persons within them perish; they can not exist outside of the proper environment.
Consider another example: Fish. They are created to live within the environment that fresh or salt water provide. Take them out of their environment and they perish. We have created “aquariums” tanks of all sizes to create an artificial environment for fish to exist outside their natural environment. But these artificial environments must be maintained so that they remain viable for the sustenance of aquatic life. If they are not, they get corrupted and the fish will die.

So now we have a picture of an environment. But how is Mercy an environment for us? Are you ready? Look at this!

Humans are bound to a corrupted nature and thus are incapable of existing without corruption. Humans are mortal, imperfect, fallible, etc. etc. Humans exist in an environment God calls the “world”. In contrast, God is eternal, perfect, infallible, etc. etc. How can corrupt humans come into His environment? Only through the transformation of their nature! But how can this be accomplished? Ah! In a very special and unique environment that provides all the necessary elements to take in a corrupt human and change his or her nature so that each become as God is: incorruptible, eternal, infallible, etc. This special environment where humans can be transformed into children of God is: MERCY! Let’s look deeper into why.

Before Jesus became forgiveness through the payment for our debt with his own life, no human could openly approach God. Humans of all creeds and religions have intuitively known this as far back as history can take us. So each civilization developed rituals and cults to seek the audience and favor of their gods through sacrifices and devotion. These things are still in practice in the human environment (the world) to this day. It was only through these artificial “passages” that humans attempted to contact the deity and gain their attention and favor. The fundamental problem with this, is that it was a human initiated effort to create an artificial environment and consequently corrupt, fallible and temporal at best. It could not work! Ever!

“But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared” Now here is a big difference! This is God initiated. It originates in a perfect, incorruptible, eternal environment. It is sustainable and it was designed to contain all the necessary elements so that imperfect, fallible, corrupt humans could enter in their mortal state without prejudice: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done” There are no conditions imposed on humans to qualify for entry; ALL ARE ACCEPTED AS THEY ARE!
Human logic reasons that in order to approach God we have to “clean up our act” God went way beyond human logic to provide a perfect way for humans to come near him in their “natural state” so that HE could transform each into a new creature.
Mercy then, is the environment in which a guilty person can enter God’s environment and not be condemned, because his or her guilt has been prepaid by Love.
Mercy is the environment in which a victim can enter and be healed and delivered from bitterness and all harm because his or her peace has been prepaid by Love.
Mercy is not an action, is an eternal place where we have come into and will never leave, for in it we are given everything necessary for our adoption and transformation into children of God. It is INSIDE MERCY that we are going to experience the Washing of Regeneration and the Renewal in the Holy Spirit.
Mercy is where we have been taken as we were moved out of the “world” (not out of planet Earth) and into the very presence of our Father so that He can make himself known to us.
But the greatest truth to receive about Mercy, is that MERCY IS A PERSON: MERCY equals JESUS! He is MERCY and He is the environment into which you and I have been placed so that our Father’s dream can be made a reality.
Throughout the Bible you will find time and again the term: “IN CHRIST” which means: Inside Jesus. Him is where we exist as children of God!
We will learn more about this amazing truth in the following episodes!

See you soon!
